Honjo and Fukakawa, on the east bank of the Sumida River, were the industrial districts of Tokyo. They were also the site of many of the city’s worst disasters. Intersected by canals, the districts frequently flooded, and they suffered the worst damage in the Great Kantō Earthquake and in the firebombings of 1945.
