Label Text: Sonia Delaunay was the tenth artist to sign the Dimensionist Manifesto. By the time Delaunay made this work, she and her husband Robert Delaunay had recently developed the concept of Simultané (Orphanism). This artistic style was in part informed by Michel-Eugène Chevreul’s On the Law of Simultaneous Contrast of Colors (1839), a somewhat scientific discourse on how the human eye responds to color. The Delaunays were interested in how light can dissolve form and create the impression of color in motion. In this work, Sonia Delaunay applies bold colors in the simple geometric forms of a circle to create a sense of movement and spatial depth.
