Description:
medallion relief profile of a man with short curly hair

Label Text:
The sitter for this portrait wears a hair style (with "dog ear" locks) popular during the Directory period (1795-99) of the French Revolution. He is dressed in an open collar shirt or smock. The artist responsible for the portrait may be Joseph-Charles Marin, who created portrait busts and sculptures with classical and mythological during his career. The heavily worked hair of the sitter is comparable to the handling of the hair style of a portrait bust of a Revolutionary man, made just before Marin left for Rome.
