Description:
This dance sash, worn by Hopi men while dancing as kachinas during ceremonies, is worn around one's waist. Finely woven from cotton and wool yarn, the white background is made from cotton, whereas the aniline dyed embroidery is woven from red, black, white, and green wool. The embroidered pattern seen on panels at the ends of the sash represent a kachina's face. A red line borders the entire sash, which has fringed white ends. A piece of deteriorating red ribbon is seen separating the fringed ends from the embroidered panels. Sashes such as these are also carved onto wooden kachina figures. AP2018
