Description: ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. This cast is of figure D from the east pediment of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The group of sculptures on the east pediment composed a scene depicting the patron goddess of Athens, Athena, being born from the head of her father and the king of the gods, Zeus. This reclining male figure is generally identified as Dionysos, the god of wine and the symposium, although some have supposed that it is a depiction of Herakles or Theseus. The original marble sculpture after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England. Provenience: Greece, Athens, Acropolis, Parthenon (original)
