Description:
Pair of women's shoes made with leather uppers (now tan in color). Lining is a bleached cotton or linen, now stained. The rounded yet flat heel suggests a date post-1830. The shoes originally secured by laces on the top; known as a slit-vamp style, the slit and corresponding holes extends from the throat down beyond the seam into the vamp. The side seam runs diagonally down each side towards the instep. According to information from the donor, these shoes were worn by "Grandmother Merry on her wedding to Robert Bishee, ca. 1849. From the family of Josephine Peppard Herney."
