Description:
American, c. 1830, according to donor, marked in ink on one hem "Louisa Denham No - 12". Linen bed sheet made of hand woven linen. Hand hems on each end approximately 1 1/4" wide, Although selvedge would tend to be handwoven most linens could be purchased ready made long before this time and by mid-century hand linen-making had virtually disappeared; also the fact that the sheet was marked with ink would indicate a much later date; presumably from the household goods of Louisa Denham Farnham, it was probably given to her sister Olivia Denham Barnes when Olivia's possessions were lost in the sinking of a ship on the Mississippi River. In a letter now in the PVMA library collection written by Miss Louisa Denham of Conway, Aug. 15, 1829, to her sister Miss Olivia Denham, Pinenook, Deerfield, she mentions making pillow cases and curtains and doing general sewing, possibly this sheet could date from the same time, measures 84" x 90"
