Description:
Linen handkerchief or towel featuring a checked design with blue and white threads in the warp, and brown (possibly faded from purple) in the weft. The width is a selvage width, hemmed top and bottom 1/8"-1/4". The initials "M-M" have been embroidered (cross stitch) in one corner. This textile is an example of the kind of "checked" linens imported into the American colonies from England in large quantities during the 18th century.
