Description:
Unfinished or experimental linen table mat in the "Grape Arbor" design, dyed a reddish-pink and printed with a deeper shade and the initials "EM" are written or stamped on one of the four columns radiating out from the center diamond. The piece is a selvage width; the top and bottom are self fringed, with the outer ends a darker color than the inner ends. Miller moved to Deerfield from Hatfield, Mass., with her family in 1893. She studied art at the New York Academy of Design, and co-founded, with Margaret Whiting (1860-1946), the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework. See also 94.023.16, a similar example in a different colorway, dated 1907. Both printed and dyed table mats reproduce (or were the inspiration for) an embroidered table mat featuring the same design, in the collection of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association.
