Description: Silver spoon with a pointed-end oval bowl, rounded shoulders, and fiddle handle, which is marked "H.B. BASCOM" for Hiram Baxter Bascom (1808-1843), the son of Alpheus Bascom, Sr. and Hannah Houk (1771-1815) of Hancock, NY. The Bascom family moved to Maysville, Kentucky in 1812 where they briefly stayed until their move to near Ripley, Ohio. It is not known where Hiram and his brother, Alpheus W. Bascom, Jr. (1806-1845) did their silvermith apprenticeships. Hiram worked for Shipp and Collins in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1832, so may have had his apprenticeship there; he was listed in the newspapers and directories of St. Louis in 1832 where he worked until his death.
