Description:
Numerous bowls are mentioned in potter's day books, but few have survived. Their very simple nature offers little in the way of attributable features. Thrown redware bowl, with molded lower foot rim, flaring curved sides, round mouth, covered in a dark brown manganese glaze which is slightly metallic, incised on bottom of pot, “PB” and in red paint, “42.” And “Col. 1908/ Gardner, Mass.” Some chips off the upper rim. Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. The original Gates notecard for this objects reads, "Bowl/ Col. Gardner, Mass. 1906 (Old Woman's Home). Red clay: black glaze inside bowl . Brownish/ speckling. Incised mark in bottom, "E.B" 7 1/2 in across/ examination in 1965: "P.B." rather than EB/ PB underscored."
