Description:
Burling iron or tweezers used to remove impurities from woven textiles (usually wool) before finishing, which is stamped "ROYAL / EDW. PARKINSON MFG CO. /PROV / R." Born in England where he was a machinist, Edward Parkinson moved to Providence in 1865 where he established his company in 1871. The company began by supplying the textile industry with loom forks, factory and domestic sewing machines and supplies, weaving machines, and other mill products. Seventy years later under new ownership, the company relocated to Esmond, RI and developed a new product line that included surface winders. In 1993 the company was renamed Parkinson Machinery and Manufacturing Corporation and, two years later, moved to Woonsocket, RI.
