Description:
Pair of American bell metal andirons, circa 1790, dealer's no. M20909 Sold to Henry Flynt by Shreve, Crump, and Low, August 6, 1951. See Schiffer, The Brass Book, p. 56 E for a similar pair. Printed on the back of the original file card: "Bell metal, "a hard alloy of copper and tin of low damping capacity used for bells." Redder tint is due to 4 parts copper, 1 part tin, andirons are not often made of it because substitution of zinc for tin material increased the cost."
