Description:
One of a pair of brass candlesticks that are similar but not matching. Both have a narrow flange over a plain, straight-sided socket, baluster stem, and dished square base. HD 63.286 has a round flattened knop in the center shaft; and 63.286A has an inverted acorn knop. The acorn design reflects Huguenot influence (French Protestant refugees who fled France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, whose silversmiths brought many new ideas and designs); the term 'Huguenot' candlesticks was used for baluster-stem candlesticks made at the end of the 17th and the early 18th centuries.
