Description:
Painted wooden box with flat, hinged top, which came from "From Miss Lucy C. McCloud, Northampton, Massachusetts." The box exterior has been decorated with a stenciled floral design in dark gold on a greenish-black ground; the interior is lined with newspaper with a 1841 date, and contains a section of the "New Hampshire Gazette" dated September 9, 1934. Lucy McCloud (b. 1862 in Hadley - d.1948 in Northampton) lived in the late 19th and early 20th-century and was a lawyer, a clerk in the Registry of Deeds in Northampton, as well as the assistant registrar of deeds. 1884 Graduate of Smith College, teacher at the Glenwood Seminary in West Brattleboro, VT (1885-86) substitute teacher at Smith Academy and Hatfield summer of 1895, Sprague Correspondence School of Law, 1900-05, passed MA Bar, 1905, lived on 10 Madison Ave. and 186 South St. in Northampton.
