Description:
Silver tablespoon with an elliptical bowl (tip worn) and rounded drop over an 11-lobed shell; straight hemispherical shaft tapered to upturned rounded-end handle; and long midrib on front of handle. The spoon is marked "J. TROTT" in a shaped rectangle, and engraved with the initials "H:F" in block letters on back of handle. Jonathan Trott (1730-1815) was born and trained as a silversmith in Boston; he worked there until c.1781 when he and his family moved to Norwich, Connecticut, where he operated a tavern from 1781-c.1785. He then moved to New London from where he resumed his profession as jeweler. Jonathan Trott trained his sons, John Proctor Trott (1769-1852) and his brother, Jonathan Trott, Jr. (1771-1813), and both also worked with him in New London.
