Label Text:
This small, intimate landscape by Esaias van de Velde beautifully illustrates the transitional phase of landscape painting in northern Holland around the 1620s. Compared to earlier Renaissance landscapes with a preference for foreign places (such as Joos de Momper’s Alpine Landscape, also on view),
van de Velde’s scene uses atmospheric perspective and warm, yellow Mediterranean light to depict a new type of Northern landscape.

Shortly after the artist painted this landscape, he began to turn away from painting atmospheric effects in order to create naturalistic landscapes with monochromatic color schemes. He sketched from nature and chose familiar locations for his subjects, which he painted with looser brushwork and a darker palette.
