Description:
Ladies shaped shawl knitted with a single strand of (possibly) pina (pineapple) fiber, which was made in the Philippines and worn in New England. The shawl was probably worn with HD 2002.15.1, a lappet of the same design used over the drooping hairsyle of the late 1830s and early 1840s. This technique was introduced into the Phillipines by New England missionaries in the 1830s, and quite a number of these have survived. The shawl and lappet were both found by a local textile dealer from Sturbridge, Mass., in a local house.
