Description:
Wooden barrel made from the trunk of a tree, carved "1737/ 147" and twice branded "DI." Multipurpose barrels such as these, made to store a variety of bulk dry commodities, were in common use throughout New England from the early 17th to the late 19th centuries. This is the earliest known dated example.
