Description:
Framed needlework marking sampler done in polychrome silk embroidery worked in a cross stitch onto a bleached or half-bleached, plain weave linen ground, which was found in the collection of local antiquarian and collector, Rachael French. The sampler has three rows of the alphabet in capital letters; over two rows in lower case letters (missing "j", "s", and "u" since its creation); over "Eliza Kellogg Hadley;" over the numbers 1-10 (in red); over "Love Virtue." The sampler is framed with a narrow border all around, which has a saw-toothed bottom edge. There were three Eliza (or Elizabeth) Kelloggs in Hadley who might have been responsible for this piece: Elizabeth Kellogg (b.1795), the daughter of John Kellogg and Roxana Matoon Kellogg; Eliza Kellogg (1802-1848), the daughter of Joseph Kellogg and Mercy Davis Kellogg; Eliza Kellogg (1807-1872), the daughter of Martin Kellogg and Hannah Hastings Kellogg. The placement of the letters and motto suggests that the sampler was made by a 6-8 yr. girl. It is in good condition with overall staining/discoloration.

Found in the collection of local antiquarian and collector, Rachel French, the maker of this small sampler is unidentified. There were three Eliza (Elizabeth) Kelloggs in the vicinity of Hadley who could have been responsible for this piece. The awkwardness of the letters and numbers suggests that the sampler was an early attempt perhaps made by a six to eight year-old girl.
