This armchair, one of a set with 2002.47.1, were originally purchased by a member of the Cutter family for use on "Cutter Farm," in Hatfield, Massachusetts (known as "Cutter's Hotel" in the nineteenth century. The Cutter Hotel sign is preserved in the collection of the Hadley Farm Museum, Hadley, Massachusetts). The house was torn down to make way for Interstate 91. Accompanying the chairs is a photograph of Caroline Cutter (great aunt of Caroline Murray, from whom the chairs were purchased) ca. 1920 and a photograph of the farm house in west Hatfield. The black-painted chairs feature bamboo-turned arm supports, thumb-cut rear stiles and shaped combs supported by five rods inserted in holes through the top rail.
