Description:
Rectangular bureau ornamented with conforming top, engaged quarter columns, four graduated drawers, and supported on angular flaring feet with scalloped brackets. The chest is an important local example that was among the furnishings of Jubinville estate, which purportedly descended from the Partridge, Lyman, and Morton families of Hatfield. The chest survives with both its original stained surface and brass pulls along with the set of wooden knobs applied in the 1830s or 1840s. The same anonymous craftsman made a secretary at Historic Northampton, which purportedly belonged to Caleb Strong. Strong (1744/5-1819) was born and died in Northampton, Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard in 1764, and was admitted to the bar in 1772. He was a member of the General Court during the Revolution and the Northampton Committee of Safety; county attorney from 1776-1800; member of the state consitutional convention in 1779; state senator from 1780-1789; U.S. senator from 1789-1796; and Massachusetts governor from 1800-1807 and 1812-1816.
