Description:
English round three-part mold-blown, dark green glass cylindrical wine bottle with an applied circular seal stamped "Tuckerman.", who was the merchant who ordered the bottle. The donor, Mr. Orton Clark, wrote: "From the Astor House Wine List of 100 years ago (see NY SUN "Along the Wine Trail by C. Selmer Fouque. "Ed Tuckerman, Esq., Boston; Madeira March's wine, went to East Indies 1818, bottled 1820 E.I.M. $5.00 a bottle." and "Ed Tuckerman, Esq., Scott, Penfield, Longman. Imported 1820 P.M. $5.00 a bottle." Wine bottle was a generic term, for such bottles held porter, ale, beer, distilled liquors, fortified wines, and a variety of spirits. The base is stamped "H. RICKETTS & CO/ GLASSWORKS BRISTOL". In 1821, Ricketts took out a patent for a standardized bottle-making mold, using a full-size, three-part mold consisting of a dip mold body part and two open-and-shut shoulder parts, where the mold seams ran horizontally around the shoulder and vertically up the neck; a push-up in the bottom of the bottle; and a removable letter plate for a basal manufacturer's mark.
