Description:
English mezzotint inscribed "John Hancock President au Congres des XIII Provinces unies d"Amerique ne a Boston" and "Se vend a Londres chez Thom Hart" and "Jean Wilckinson a Boston." There was a popular demand for prints of leaders of the American Revolution, not only in America but in England and Continental Europe. Thomas Hart was one of several London publishers who issued a series of mezzotints of important American figures between 1775-1778. Nothing is known about J. Wilckinson who signed other contemporary engravings including General Benedict Arnold, Gen. Israel Putnam, and Admiral Hopkins. This print is based on John Singleton Copley's seated portrait of John Hancock (1736-1793) done in Boston in 1765 when Hancock was President of the Continental Congress. Donald
