Description:
Princess Amelia Sophia Eleanor of Great Britain (10 June 1710/11 – 31 October 1786) was the second daughter of King George II of Great Britain and Queen Caroline. She was born at Herrenhausen Palace, Hanover, Germany. At the time of her birth, her father was Hereditary Prince of Brunswick-Lüneburg, son and heir of the Elector of Hanover. Her mother was Caroline of Ansbach, daughter of Johann Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. She was known to her family as Emily. On 1 August 1714, Queen Anne of Great Britain and Ireland died. Princess Amelia's grandfather succeeded her to become George I of Great Britain, in accordance with the provisions of the Act of Settlement 1701. Amelia's father, now heir apparent to the throne of Great Britain, was made Duke of Cornwall and created Prince of Wales on 27 September 1714. She moved to Great Britain with her family and they took up residence at St James's Palace in London. Framed reverse painted mezzotint on glass of Princess Amelia (1711-1786) as princess. Portrait, half-length, in oval frame, wearing a red-colored brocade decorated with a row of jewels, and an ermine trimmed cloak hanging over right arm and behind left shoulder, with pearls in her hair, head tilted over left shoulder, looking towards the viewer out of the corner of her eye; after Hysing; state published by Faber. The inscription at the bottom reads, "H Hysing Pinx"/ "Faber Fecit"/ and below "Her Royal Highness Princess Amelia/ Second Daughter to His Majesty King George the 2d./ Sold by J. Faber at ye Golden Head in Bloomsbury Square." First state. A second state was made by John and Thomas Bowles with slight changes.
