Description: Mixed-style side chair in maple with traces of old red paint, which was owned by the Lane family of Northampton and Deerfield and may be one of those described by Miss Coleman as belonging to Martin Lane, Susan Lane's father (Coleman Inventory #167, 1963 Inventory Card Room #7). After the Queen Anne vase-shaped backs were introduced into the colonies in the 1720s, they were often combined with the older William and Mary rush-seated, block-and-vase turned bases that were popular on banister back chairs. This mixed style was popular through the eighteenth century; the key to their dating is based on their base turnings. The chair has a well-carved, yoked neck crest rail over a vase-shaped back splat and turned stiles; rush seat; turned front legs ending in half-ball feet; two balls in the turned front stretcher and three plain rectangular side and back stretchers; and turned back legs ending in chamfered feet.
