Label Text: Little-known Luigi Barocci was a reproductive engraver active in Rome during the first half of 19th century. In this engraving, Barocci followed traditional reproductive techniques, including use of the moiré pattern, in a highly controlled and standardized manner. The series of diamond shapes with regular dashes and dots, especially systematic in execution, creates tonality across broad surfaces in imitation of the wider tonal range of painting. Raphael’s compositions earned admiration long after Goltzius’s time; here Barocci reproduced the "Madonna of Divine Love," at the time given to Raphael but now considered his workshop. At the lower left, Barocci credits the original master, and at the lower right he identifies himself as designer and printmaker.
