Description: hosoban; yakusha-e; possibly a single panel of a diptych or polyptych
Label Text: This print is signed "Katsukawa Shunshō ga" ('drawn by Katsukawa Shunshō') at lower-middle right. It bears no other identifying marks. However, the actor can be identified as Ichikawa Danjurō V by his crest or 'mon," the nested squares visible on his robe near his right shoulder. This name was held by the actor Ichikawa Hakuen I from ca. 1770–1791. The iconography of the image as well aids with the identification and dating of the print. The actor's attire is that of a "rokuju-rokubu" a follower of Buddhist on his pilgrimage. The removal of his straw hat, which lies on the ground at lower-left, and the drawing of his sword, indicate that he is shedding his disguise. Records indicate that this play was performed as a "kaomise" ('face-showing,' an opening of a new theatrical season) in the 11th lunar month of 1776 at the Ichimura Theatre in Edo.
