Description:
Silver teaspoon with a pointed oval bowl, slightly flared shoulders, and fiddle-end handle, which is marked "B.E. COOK / NORTHAMPTON" in a serrated rectangle on the back for Benjamin Ely Cook (1803-1900) of Northampton, and engraved with the initials "MA to MAS" in script on the front of the handle. The son of Dr. George W. Cook and Margaret Teller Cook of Hyde Park, New York, Benjamin E. Cook married Elizabeth Christine Griffin in 1827 in Hudson, NY, where he was apprenticed to her father, Isaiah Griffin (1777-1863); he also worked for Abram Fellows & Co. in Troy, NY. In 1827, Cook moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, where he worked on Shop Row in partnership with Nathan Storrs (1768-1839) between 1827 and 1833; by himself from 1833-1858; and with his son, Benjamin E. Cook, Jr., as B. E. Cook & Son from 1858-1900.
