Description:
view of building from acorss bridge, carriages in square in front of building at left middle ground

Label Text:
Quinet was one of many photographers in the nineteenth century who profited from the sale of images of the monuments of Paris. This photograph of the Hôtel de Ville, or City Hall, of Paris shows the Renaissance-era building after renovations of the 1830s, but before the building's destruction during the Commune of 1871. Though nearly deserted in this photograph, the plaza in front has a history of public uprisings and executions. The Pont d'Arcole, visible in the foreground, was one of the first iron bridges to span the Seine.
