Description:
Fowler with a walnut stock, stamped "Woodley Sargant & Crane" on the lockplate. Woodley & Sargeant are listed in Carey's book as general gunsmiths in Birmingham working about 1815, and a Woolley as a general gunsmith in Birmingham about 1835. In Wrightson's Triennial Directory of 1818, Woolley, Sargant & Crane are listed on Edmund Street in Birmingham for edge tools and sword manufacturers to the Board of Ordnance. Their mark has been also found on flintlock fowling guns such as this example. This fowler has flintlock, engraved brass hardware including an engraved trigger strap ending in an acron finial, checkered wrist, shotgun butt, and the original brush and pick; there are two smudged Birmingham proof marks (used after 1813) on the barrel.
