Description:
Green silk ground sampler featuring rows of letters and numbers in the top of center field with the remaining area filled with bands of floral bouquets, baskets, and dogs. The inscription at bottom reads: “Jerusha Lyman, 1792, Age Eight Years” Center field is surrounded by border of trailing strawberry vines.The composition features the expected letters, numbers, and floral motifs, with an unusual blue-green ground. The sampler’s condition is excellent with vibrant colors.

Label Text:
This signed and dated sampler was made by Jerusha Lyman of Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1792. Jerusha was the daughter of Jerusha Welles Lyman (1760-1803) and William Lyman (1755-1811). William graduated from Yale College in 1776, served in the Revolutionary War, and later became a congressman. Jerusha Lyman married Bishop Jackson Kemper in 1816 but died in 1818.
