Description:
Blue and white transfer printed platter by Enoch Wood and Sons with a view of the U.S. Capitol building on the front, but mismarked "Northampton Mass" on the reverse. The platter is part of a larger series, Wood's four medallion-floral border series, which includes ten American views. The "Northampton Mass" pattern features a view of the Henry G. Bowers house, a Greek Revival style mansion located in Northampton, Massachusetts. Enoch Wood copied the view of the house from an engraving by Fenner, Sears & Co. mistakenly titled “Residence of Jos. Bowers, Northampton, Mass.,” which was based on a drawing by Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892). It was published in London by I.T. Hinton & Simpkin & Marshall on November 1, 1830, and included in John Howard Hinton’s The History and Topography of the United States (1832).
