Label Text:
Standards of time in Edo Japan (1603–1868) were defined as sunrise and sunset, and daytime and nighttime each consisted of six equal parts. Those units had to be adjusted based on the length of the day and night, as well as the season. Japanese clocks of the nineteenth century were peculiar in the way they combined mechanisms based on this traditional temporal hour system with European mechanical clocks, which were imported in the sixteenth century.
