Description:
Chinese export porcelain teaset, probably made for the American market, with eight pieces (including 2 lids), decorated with floral sprays and dotted scrolling bands in pink, green and orange-red. The set includes: cylindrical, straight-sided teapot and cover, sugar bowl and cover, footed cream pot, coffee cup, teacup, and saucer; the covers have strawberry finials. The cylindrical teapot did not appear until around 1780, the shape derived from contemporary English ceramic forms with its double entwined strap handle and floral attachments. The helmet-shaped cream pot with its bamboo-shaped handle, which was popular throughout the 18th century, was derived from a French silver or pewter model. The glaze on this cream pot appear different from the glazes on the other pieces, which may mean that it was added to the set at another time.
