Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Maddy Barker, class of 2015:

This study for a spandrel depicts the classical Athenian philosopher, Socrates, receiving inspiration from his genius, one of countless studies Delacroix made in preparation for the huge decorative scheme he painted for the main hall (Salon du Roi) of the Palais Bourbon. Rather than extolling good government, he chose themes representing a good mind and spirit, drawing from poetry, theology, and philosophy. In the inscription the artist remarks upon the proportions of the composition.
