Description: man standing against building, sky in right section, half-length portrait, head turned to his right, right arm behind him, left hand holding up his cloak.
Label Text: At the height of his career, Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck embarked on a massive printmaking enterprise: a series of portrait etchings featuring famous individuals of his day. He produced the original chalk sketches and major elements such as the faces, but the etchings were usually finished by other artists. After his death, the works became known as the Iconography.
Adam van Noort, a generation older than Van Dyck, was a venerated master artist and teacher at the time of this portrait. Van Noort’s dignified pose and draped garments recall the stance of a Roman senator, a testament to Van Dyck’s respect for the old master.
