Label Text:
This pastel portrait was one of Mary Rogers Williams’s last works. She considered it a success, remarking while she was working on it that she was “getting something really charming.” In 1907, the Tyler sisters, Marian and Emma, visited Williams at her studio in Paris. Williams regarded Emma, a Smith alumna, as “the brightest, drollest girl I’ve ever met.” She became friends with the young women and made this pastel sketch for her own amusement. She kept it in her Paris studio, where it remained until she died.
