Label Text:
Corot was primarily known for his landscapes, but these two paintings offer a view into other aspects of his art. Jumièges represents a townscape from an early moment in the artist’s career before he had made a name for himself. It features the ruins of a monastery in the northwestern region of France that had been a center of learning in the 7th century, but was likely destroyed during the French Revolution.
