Description:
Perched atop a cottonwood root on three separate stands, these kachinas were made for the tourist trade. The small Wolf kachina features a black and white striped head, painted eyes, pointy teeth, and a tongue. He is yellow and wears a fur neckpiece. On his body are painted black and white spots, accompanied by a crisscrossed chest sash, a black apron with colorful yarn, numerous bracelets and armbands, and fringed shoes. He holds a black gourd rattle and sticks in his hands. The Mudhead kachina is painted red with white facial features, and has carved "knobs" on the top and sides of his head. Feathers protrude from these knobs. A yellow kerchief is around his neck, whereas he wears buckskin cuffs on his wrists and a concha belt around his waist. A black and colored yarn "kilt" is around his waist. He carries a feather and a yellow gourd rattle in either hand. He has black leggings and no shoes. The Great Horned Owl kachina appears with feathers around his head, large yellow carved eyes, and a carved beak. His head is painted blue with painted feathers, as well. A fur neckpiece is seen below his head, with numerous fringed buckskin accoutrements across his chest and on his arms. Wearing a black apron, he also wears a patterned sash around his waist. In one hand is a yucca stick, and in the other is a bow. With black yarn ties on his legs, he also wears fringed boots. AP2018
