Tryon did not often paint still life, and this is the only example in the Smith collection. Henry White, Tryon's student and biographer, wrote that the artist advised his students to carefully choose and arrange the objects to be painted as well as the background. "Working with us he would select, reject, arrange and rearrange, until we attained a pleasing result. The picture was there; all we had to do was render it. For, as he said, 'A study well arranged is half painted.'"
