Label Text:
In this devotional image, the Virgin and Child are flanked by two pairs of angels and two saints. At the left, Saint Jerome (d. 419) is shown in his red cardinal's robe holding a book and quill pen, attributes that refer to his great scholarship. As the right is Saint Bernardino of Siena, a dynamic preacher who died in 1444 and was canonized in 1450. Sano di Pietro, who must have heard him preach, was devoted to Saint Bernardino and included him in many of his paintings of the Virgin and Child. Commissioned to create important altarpieces for churches in Siena and the surrounding region, Sano di Pietro is also known to have painted small devotional images for cells (small rooms) of Franciscan monks and nuns. Members of Sano di Pietro's workshop are thought to have assisted their master with this painting.
