Description:
English creamware, baluster-shaped jug decorated with three transfer prints (bat printed) in red, blue, green, black, and yellow, and with an attached strap handle. The scene to the left of the handle has a Scotsman carrying human as a bagpipe and the inscriptions, "An Old Performer playing on a new Instrument or one of the 42nd toutching the Invincible" and "God Save great George our King. Long live out Nobel King. God save the King." This depicts a Highlander of the 42nd Regiment, later to become the Black Watch, playing a 'Corsican' or Napoleon Bonaparte-like bagpipe, which refers to the English victory over the French outside of Alexandria in 1801, including the capture of the Eagle of Napoleon's Invincibles by Sir Ralph Abercrombie, for which the 42nd were awarded the battle honor "Egypt with Sphinx." Several versions of this print were made by different makers including Spode. It was based on a print of the same name. The scene to the right of the handle is titled "HOPE" over a woman in a grey shawl and red dress seated on a rock with an anchor leaning against her side and a sailing ship on the right. The third thransfer print under the spout depicts a young boy and girl holding their hats while chasing a butterfly.
