Description:
Molded figure of a resting lion, seated on a rectangular base with molded sides, lion has front paws outstretched, head is erect and facing forward, back legs rest underneath its body, and the tail wraps around the side of the lion, on the underside of the base, stamped "LEEDS POTTERY". The Seniors (father James Wraith and sons James and George W.) created revival pieces of Leeds Pottery from original Leeds Pottery molds as well as creating elaborate pierced wares, figures, oval cameos in creamware and black basalt, molded jugs in Pratt colors, and chinoiserie blue decorated creamwares, yellow glazed wares, and silver luster wares. The original Leeds Pottery was not known to have created figures like this example. According to an interview with George W. Senior at Temple Newsom House, Leeds, in 1967, performed by ceramics expert Peter Walton, Senior said that the firm produced "lions, bulls, and Shakespeare heads." This example of a lion figure is also known in bisque or unglazed ware in the collection of the Leeds Museums & Galleries.
