Description:
Thrown, red earthenware ovoid shaped jug, with flat bottom, turned edge of base, swelled sides, tapered shoulders, narrow spout with flaring lip, attached strap handle, incised line just below the spout, covered all over in a dark brown manganese black lead glaze. Inscribed in black ink on base, “Col. ’10 Leominster” and in red paint, “53.” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original notecard from the Gates papers reads, "Jug/ Col. Leominster 1910. Red clay: Black glaze Incised ring/ 8.5 in."
