Description:
Octagonal molded jar (missing lid), with circular opening, flared octagonal mouth with flat rim, bead between neck and body, body of jar is composed of eight flat faceted sides, with a slightly domed base, the surface of the pot mimics wood with the use of a speckled glaze all over the surface of the pot and some streaks of dark manganese glaze over the sides, underside of jar has only the speckled surface and no dark streaks, marked on underside in red paint, "110." Originally part of the Burton N. Gates Collection, notecard from the Gates Collection reads: "110/ Jar./ Col. in Putnam. Red clay, glaze grained to imitate wood./ Deep rich color. Illus. in "Country Life" article. 7 in high x 5 3/4/ in." A penned note on a piece of cardboard left in the jar reads, "Charlestown jug/ faceted tobacco jar/30"
