Description:
Thrown, stoneware jug with round base, bulbous belly, narrowing neck with two horizontal ribs, large spout that points upward, attached to the back of the jug is a handle with a foliate terminal, covered all over with a dark brown slip, this jug appears to be turned on a lathe and is uniformly thin walled, inscribed on bottom in red paint, “155” and in pencil, “431” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original Gates notecard for this object reads, "Pitcher: helmet shape. Stoneware: purple black glaze. About 6 in high./ Col. Mrs. Eugenia M. W. Snow, Springfield, Mass. 1912/ (see letter) who purchased of Frank T. Hosmer of Gfld./ who found it localled or near by. He said it belonged to/ Family of Newcomb Graves of Deerfield or No. Sunderland/ I attribute its make to Whately by reason of glaze and /modeling. BNG/ letter attached." Attached typed letter reads: "Pottery col #155. Dr. Burton N. Gates/ My dear Sir-, I purchased the brown pitcher of Frank P. Hosmer of this town who found it in some of his travels in this section. He told me at the time that it be-longed originally to the family of Newcomb Graves of Deerfield, (or North Sunderland.) Very truly yours, Eugenia M W Snow/ Mrs. Francis J. Snow/ Greenfield. Mass. Oct. 2 - 1912." White paper note within object (now in data file) reads - this note appears to refer to other object and perhaps not this example: "Box "A" (named 2009) - large unglazed thin jar is on four corners for speaker on bottom/ antoher thrown pot on bottom/ Kitchen over cabinets/ cyl jar s NH/ marerich cyl jar w/vestigial handles #39/ Blk jug col. Yarmouthport Cape Cod/ #190 Pitcher col of Osborne of Philadelphia/ he had a pair"
