Description:
Molded 12 paneled or sided jug, the jug is bellied with a circular foot with molded edge, attached molded 7-shape handle, decoration under spout consists of two scrolls on each side and a grouping of leafy foliage, covered all over in a dark brown Albany slip glaze; painted number in red "139" on bottom; impressed stamp on bottom of jug reads: "J. T. WINSLOW/ PORTLAND, ME" Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. The Gates catalogue card reads: "139/ Pitcher stoneware Black glaze 12 flat sides/ 9 in high. moulded. slight conventional? decoration on /lip marked J.T. WINSLOW/ PORTLAND, ME. Impressed in bottom. Col. 1913. Portland, BNG. 1913. The company still in business under name (alleged) Portland Stoneware co. (Ed. B. Winslow) Family Winslow and co. sold to make drain tile largely now." Originally part of the Burton N. Gates collection. Original Gates notecard for object reads, "Pitcher stone ware Black glaze 12 flat sides/ 9" high Moulded slight conventional decoration on/ lip Marked J. T. WINSLOW/ PORTLAND. ME. Impressed in bottom/ Col. 1913. Portland. BNG./ 1913. The company still in business under the name (alleged)/ Portland Stoneware Co. (Ed. B. Winslow) Formerly Winslow and co. Sold to/ make drain tile largely now." According to Lura Woodside Watkins, New England Potters, "the name of John T. Winslow is first seen in the directory of 1850/51, where he is called "stoneware manufacturer" - Westbrook Point." The point was at the north end of Deering Bridge in the Westbrook Section of Portland, and the Portland Stone Ware Company, run by Winslow descendants, still has a plant in this same location....A trade card dated 1874 lists under "Stone Ware Goods" jugs, butter pots, cake pots, water jugs, ... One of the finest types of ware turned out by the Portland company was their stoneware with a variegated glaze in tones of blue, brown, and cream yellow, which compares favorably with the flint enamel of Bennington....At an earlier period Winslow made use of Albany slip."
