Description:
English pearlware cylindrical sugar bowl (originally with a mis-matched cover) decorated on two sides with an American eagle with an "H" in gilt script in the shield on its breast in brown, orange, black, and gilding. Transfer-printed creamwares and pearlwares of this design are commonly known as "Liverpool-type" ceramics. Jugs, plates, bowls, plaques, and mugs were often potted locally or produced in Staffordshire for the many transfer-printing establishments in Liverpool. Orders from Americans, especially ship captains, kept these printing businesses busy as they successfully used images designed to appeal to the sentiments, politics, and patriotism of Americans. The eagles, which a variant of the American eagle taken from the Great Seal of the United States adopted by the Continental Congress in 1782, have a sunburst with thirteen stars over its head, three layers of feathers on the wings, the left talon holding five black arrows, and the right with an olive branch. The bowl has a flared rim, baluster-shaped body, and two interwined, ribbed handles with four foliate terminals highlighted in brown and orange with traces of gilding. It has been broken and repaired.
