Description:
Tall clock with the works made by Richardson Miner (1736-1797), which are inscribed: "Rich:son/Miner./Stratford" on the signature plate in the arch. Miner, who was both a silversmith and clockmaker, started working in Stratford about 1758. He also served as regimental armorer in 1755 and in Colonel Nathan Whiting's Second Connecticut Regiment, 7th Company, from April 5 to November 9, 1760 during the French and Indican War. His understanding of metallurgy equipped him to serve as an armorer maintaining the ordnance—firearms and metal equipment—of the army. The clock has a eight-day brass movement fronted by a brass dial with a calendar window, inset seconds dial, all framed by brass spandrels (key and winder in small cupboard 1/4/94). The clock case has a flat, molded-edged top, rounded arch-topped door; and cyma scroll base over cut feet. Historic Deerfield has a powder horn (2005.20.32) dated 1760, which is attributed to Miner.
